Project Description
This vibrant courtyard garden is set on the dining area at the rear of the property, with French bi fold doors opening out to reveal a new and inviting external space. This extends the homes living area and seamlessly fuses the natural world with the physical structure.
The client brief stipulated that MUD re-imagine a small courtyard and create a warm and wholesome space with functional elements – specifically somewhere to entertain friends and family and rinse off after the beach. The client also wanted to take a sustainable approach which presented an exciting challenge for MUD…
We love projects like this!
MUD had the chance to get creative. We explored a range of concepts and design ideas before determining that the final garden would include:
- An edible green feature wall constructed from reclaimed timber.
- Rustic outdoor garden shower with drainage to garden.
- Bench style seats for merrymaking and enjoying a cup of tea or vino!
- Functional storage within the bench seating.
- Wicking pots and an irrigation system ensuring plants are watered even when no one is home… Did someone say low maintenance! 😊
MUD collaborated with Tree Frog Permaculture who assisted with the garden planting schedule to achieve a holistic eco system that would support the bees, insects and birds. This incorporated a range of herbs and native ginger and passion fruit trees – both delicious and aromatic!
The garden has already played host to a throng of friends, provided fresh produce for the kitchen and improved the value of the property and the lives of the client. In the future, a street art mural is planned. Watch this space for more details!
Mark Tisdell surprised and delighted us with his innovative design. Consultations with Mark have been comfortable and he was always willing to discuss any of our reservations, queries and suggestions.
Mark Tisdell from MUD nailed it with the first design concept! And was able to bring this to life with detailed plans that enabled us to get a better idea of how it would look when finished.

We were very satisfied with MUD’s design process. Mark was willing to re design any detail until we were completely happy.
The garden, while a work in progress, is dramatically different and is already a joy to view. We are looking forward to seeing it mature!
This project changed the way our home and interior exterior living works. With a beautiful outlook from every angle and entertaining options for not just summer, but winter as well. We couldn’t be happier with the result!
I would highly recommend Mark Tisdell to anyone in need of a Landscape Architect.
Mark was flexible with meeting times, and comprehensive in resourcing materials and services for our building and gardening work.
I have already recommended Mark from MUD to a few friends!
